03.28.11 - The Original Baby Daddy

This post has nothing to do with the photo of me with all three of the kiddos. They were all wearing monkey jams and were reading a series of Tonka Truck books before bed. After Nate and Tommy were asleep, Maddie asked for Molly, one of her babies. I commented to Angie that because Maddie has so many I wouldn't even know which one Molly is if she were right in front of me. Maddie found her and carried her out to the living room. "See, Mike," Angie said. "That's Molly, the original baby daddy."

Notice the missing comma? Yeah, there should be one between "baby" and "daddy" to imply that she's telling me that Molly is the original, or first, baby that Maddie had. The way she said it made it sound like Molly is a baby daddy. No, that's me. I'm the original baby daddy. :)

We always get a good laugh out of this lesson in copy editing. I also go back to this example.

"Let's eat, Grandma!" or "Let's eat Grandma!" Personally, I'd rather have dinner with Grandma than to have Grandma for dinner. But that's just me.

  2. Harper, apparently taking a cue from Maddie, now likes to scoop up armfuls of dolls and say, "Lots and lots of babies."

  3. It's "more babies," Brandi. And I'm thinking the next time you travel to Newton you guys are invited over for dinner. :)
