03.24.12 - Tommy's first birthday party

We celebrated Tommy's first birthday today. The theme was puppies. As always, Angie outdid herself in baking the cake.

Puppy chow snack mixed served in a water dish, of course.

Get the family together and Maddie turns shy and crawls up on Grandma Shepherd's lap. She sulked for awhile.

Those are NOT real dog treats.

Finally, after three years of hosting birthday parties, we finally figured out how to comfortably accommodate everyone in our small living room.

The birthday boy cuddles with Grandpa Greg.

Each kid gets a balloon tied to their dining room chair on their birthday. We were disappointed that Party City no longer carries the giant "1" balloon. We settled for this uninspired cupcake instead.

I think Angie was more excited about the gifts than Tommy was.

We have no idea what sparked this reaction from Gramma Karen and Savannah.

Tommy's much anticipated chair arrived. He'd been pushing Nate's around for the past month or so, which didn't make Nate very happy.

He knows just how it works.

01.22.12 - Monkeys!

It's been such a mild winter that we just had to get out to the zoo today. The kids were excited to go and we were excited to get them out of the house! Tommy has grown so much since our last trip that he actually noticed the different animals this time, including the monkeys.

11.03.11 - Picture Day

Tommy gets into his "Sunday best" for our family photo session with Brandi today, which went about as well as you can imagine a photo shoot with three under three might go. But, we are anxious to see the results. There are sure to be some great outtakes!

Tommy pulls his snuggly puppy over his face to block the light from his eyes as he drifts off to sleep in his mother's arms.

09.22.11 - Smile pretty

Tommy smiles for Shobana, Wichita's genetic counselor, during an appointment today to discuss a genetic test that, we hope, will confirm Tommy's ocular albinism diagnosis. The photo will be part of his electronic medical record at her clinic.

09.15.11 - Good students

Angie pays close attention to Karen, Tommy's vision teacher from Rainbows, during a home visit this morning. I don't know that we've ever officially announced on this blog that Tommy has been diagnosed with ocular albinism, mostly because it's a fairly new diagnosis and we don't know much about it and how it will affect him. Some cases are so severe that eyesight is only correctable to 20/200, some require surgeries and some yet need no correction at all. We've noticed Tommy to be tracking more in the last few weeks and Karen today didn't hesitate in telling us that she thought he'd have just a mild case with his biggest issue being light sensitivity (thus the shades you've seem him sport in a few photos). Nevertheless, we won't know exactly how well he can see until he's old enough to tell us. That doesn't mean we're going to set back and not be proactive.

08.10.11 - Inside the doctor's office

Want to know what it looks like taking three kids to the doctor at the same time? Well, here ya go! That's Nate eating spilled Goldfish crackers off the floor and Maddie tossing her Snuggly Bunny in the air while Dr. Green examines Tommy. We're lucky that Dr. Green allows us to combine as many appointments as possible to cut down on the number of trips we make to his Andover office. Still, this photo makes my head spin and I have no idea how he manages three patients - two of them toddlers - at the same time. Maybe he's just that good!

At his four-month checkup, Tommy weighed 18 pounds and measured 27 inches, both about the 90th percentile. His head circumference measured 16 inches, which is in the sixth percentile. Yup, a fat guy with a tiny head!

08.07.11 - McDonald's

Maddie and Nate received coupons for free strawberry lemonades from McDonald's for participating in the library's summer reading program. Normally we wouldn't opt for McDonald's, much less actually going inside, but the chance to have a free treat to break up an otherwise long weekend day was too much to pass up. And, we called Nan and Pop to join us and they did! Of course, Nan, the Chicken McNugget pusher, couldn't leave without buying a six-piece and some french fries for the kids to share. Don't worry, Tommy, you'll get some soon enough.

08.03.11 - Stayin' inside

Tommy made an appearance at the medical school today but it was too danged hot to hang out in the courtyard where there was a watermelon feed underway. So instead he watched with his momma from just inside the doors where it was nice and cool.

07.25.11 - Blurred vision

Why an eye doctor's office would find it funny to put funhouse mirrors in their waiting room is beyond me. Don't they know that the people who go there have vision problems?

(And that vision problems aren't funny.)

07.21.11 - Don't bug me!

What is it with Angie and stuffed ducks? Oh, well. Tommy didn't mind!

07.17.11 - Baby Bjorn

We decided to pull the Baby Bjorn out of the closet today. It will take a few adjustments to get it to fit just right and it's only good up to 25 pounds, which means we'll only be able to use it until Thursday, but it was nice for Angie to be able to start prepping dinner without tending to a cranky baby who didn't want to be left alone again.

Mike: Angie, do you feel like you're always carrying a baby on the front of you?
Angie: Yes, yes I do!

07.15.11 - Loungin' with Grandpa Shepherd

My parents came over to watch the kids tonight so Angie and I could go on a long overdue date night. We had dinner at Pei Wei (tell them it's your first visit and get free lettuce wraps!), found new house numbers at Menards, ran into a high school friend and her family at Target and took in a movie at the drive-in. It doesn't matter what the kids did tonight. They were fast asleep when we got home and that's all that matters! Thanks Grandma and Grandpa Shepherd for taking care of them!

07.12.11 - Bedtime stories

Tommy listens to one of Maddie's bedtime stories.
